PM flags off Kerala’s first metro in Kochi
Guwahati/17th June’2017(Prag News Desk): India’s first integrated multi-mode transport system-Kochi Metro is flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
What makes Kochi Metro unique is that reserved jobs are allocated for transgenders and it will mostly be run by women employees.
It is a major step towards women empowerment and gracing the occasion, ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan along with Modi took the first Metro ride after the inaugural at the rail network’s Palarivatom station.
“The city is growing so are its people which is expected to reach 23 lakhs by 2021. Therefore, a mass rapid transport system is most essential to the urban infrastructure. The Kochi metro is a huge tool to impart economical strength to Kochi.” said Modi.
Significantly, the Kochi metro is the first to be commissioned with a modern “Communication Based Train Control Signalling System. The coaches reflect the ‘Make in India’ vision and have been built by Alstom of France, at their factory near Chennai, and have an Indian component of around 70 per cent.
The Kochi metro is special as it will recruit 1,000 women and 23 transgenders to work in the Kochi Metro Rail System. A path-breaker service that is meant to benefit the social-economic infrastructure.
