CM Sonowal attends Van Mahotsav, yet the grim reality stays…
Guwahati/ 1st July’2017 (Prag News Desk): CM Sarbananda Sonowal attended the 68th Van Mahotsava celebrations at Koliabor & took part in a massive plantation drive on the occasion.
However , these festivities also highlight some grim realities that Prag News observed. Assam beholds one of the richest bio-diversity concentration in India.
The segmentation viz the tropical wet evergreen forests are found in the districts of Golaghat, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and in a narrow stretch in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts along foot hills.
These forests also occur in the southern part of the State at lower elevations in Borail Range, and in Loharbund, Sonai, Longai and Dholia Reserve Forests in Cachar and Karimganj Districts.
However, the recent attacks of elephants and other animals like wild cats resulting into grave man-human conflicts highlights massive loopholes, the biggest of which is the depleting forest concentration in these mentioned areas.
Sighting few incidents here, where a jumbo in the forests of Amsung died in a man-human conflict, another death reported after coming to contact with open electrical wires in Bejeni, Kalangpar on Monday. They entered into the paddy fields of Bejeni in search of food. Reportedly two dumpers were used to carry the dead mammal for burial.
These two folded murders takes us to the very question that planting saplings only during a festival is not worth the game, wildlife conservation demands conservation that is continuous.
Incidentally, these incidents have been frequently happening in the state for the last few years awaiting a solution.
Another instance, on 18th of June a group of wild elephants attacked the Ghuramari Patanjali Herbal And Food Park , Rangapara district ,which was under construction.
The elephants vandalised the walls of the centre and destroyed whatever they found inside the premises.
This incident happened at the very place where few months back a wild elephant died by falling inside a tunnel within the same premises with its calf trying desperately to revive the dead mother.
These deaths are so painfully plentiful that it cannot be ignored anymore and times are that the State Government have to work fast and real soon.
