IGNOU to provide free education for transgender
Guwahati/ 4th July’2017 (Prag News Desk): The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) decided to provide free education in all programmes to transgender candidates.
It includes degree, diploma and certificate courses.
Certificate issued by the central/state government, medical officer or any other competent authority or Aadhaar card is acceptable for the purpose.
Ravindra Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU says, “Our initiative step will inspire the transgender students towards educational road with encouragement.”
The university so far received application from around hundred transgenders, source added.
Last year, an NGO approached Delhi Regional Director to enroll transgender into programmes.
In 2012, university introduced the ‘other’ gender category in admission forms before transgender were officially recognised by Supreme Court.
University regional centres of Varanasi and Chennai demanded free concession for transgender students. IGNOU’s regional centre of Kochi recently organised special orientation programme for transgender students.
Today IGNOU is the largest Open University in the country with over three million students enrolled over 200 programmes.
