Government initiates massive eviction drive inside Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary
Guwahati/ 26th August’2017 (Prag News Desk): The personnel of police in association with civil administration demolished total 283 houses inside the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary during an ongoing eviction drive yesterday.
According to sources,two teams including four elephants, eight excavators, 1,200 personnel and 400 labors have been deployed to evict encroachers for the eviction drive.
It will be important to mention here that a group of judges from Guwahati High Court has set a deadline for the government to complete eviction of the encroachers in the forest area.
The High court took up the issue in the year 2013 after getting a letter from an NGO named Early Bird,which read how due to encroachment the total area of the forest were shrinking at that time.
As per a recent survey, the number of encroachers inside the sanctuary would be around 6000 ,covering a total of 500 hectares of land inside the sanctuary.
The eviction drive is expected to continue for a few more days inside the sanctuary.
