Guwahati/ 22nd September’2017 (Prag News Desk): Rohit Krishna Mahanta, a lawyer serving under the standing counsel of the Assam government is held by Delhi Police after he mows over 21 year old Gurpeet Singh and his friend on Sunday.
Mahanta who was drunk engaged himself in a word brawl with the duo on being asked not to smoke in public. The two were apparently having parathas at the road side stall. Mahanta allegedly abused and threatened the duo. They decide to leave but as they crossed the AIIMS trauma centre, Mahanta enraged, hits the Bullet motorcycle, which Gurpreet was driving with Maninder riding pillion, with his Ford Fiesta car.
Mahanta’s car also hits an auto and a cab before coming to a halt. Police who had initially booked the accused, , for rash driving and causing hurt by an act of negligence. But after the victim, Gurpreet Singh, died the police arrested the accused and slapped charges of murder on Mahanta.
“The man was smoking a cigarette and blowing the smoke into our faces. The smoke not only caused us physical problem, it was also against our religious belief. So, we requested him to avoid smoking in public,” Maninder, who was the pillion rider and also the roomate of the deceased stated.
He further added that the cops present at the moment wanted them state that it was a casual accident.
” We requested the man to stop smoking but in return, the drunk man abused us with death threats and sensing the argument turing violent, we picked up the bike and went off. But barely 500 meters away, we were followed and dashed by this Ford Fiesta. We fell down, and this man came up to us…it was the same man!”
Incidentally, before coming to a halt, the car also went on to hit an auto and an Ola cab, leaving both the vehicles badly damaged.
“His medical examination showed he was drunk. He had threatened Gurpreet after an argument and later he followed Gurpreet’s bike and rammed it from behind,” said Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (south).
