Guwahati/16 November ’2017 (Prag News Desk): An initiative measure taken to encourage tourism and project religious harmony in a region roiled and annoyed by Islamist militancy in Pakistan. On wednesday, the remains of a sleeping Buddha image, almost 1,700-year-old was discovered.
The first ancient Buddhist site in Bhamala province was discovered in 1929. Eighty-eight years on, excavations restarted and the 14-metre-(48-foot)-high Kanjur stone Buddha image was brought out which is a complete reflection of the diverse history and culture of the South Asian country.
“This is from the 3rd century AD, making it the world’s oldest sleeping Buddha remains,” Abdul Samad, director of Bhamla’s archaeology and museums department, told Reuters.
