Guwahati/ 4th April’2017(Prag News Desk): 58 years had passed since the Tibetian spiritual leader Dalai Lama came to India seeking refuge during the Chinese invasion of 1959 but meeting Retd. Havilder Naren Chandra Das after 5 decades was an emotional reminiscence for the leader.

Dalai Lama was received by a team of seven officials led by Section Commander Naik Debu Singh Gurung. Havilder Das was rifleman then in the 5th Assam Rifles. He is 79 year old and is the only known survivor from the first people who received Dalai Lama on Indian soil.

Remembering the day, Mr. Das told TOI, “We were armed with 303 rifle and we escorted him on foot. He was on horseback. There were no Chinese because at that time India’s immediate neighbor was Tibet, not China”
