Guwahati/ 18th May’2017(Prag News Desk): Environmentalist Purnima Devi Barman has been awarded with the prestigious Whitley Award, also known as the Green Oscars for the year 2017. The award has been conferred to her on account of her consistent efforts and campaigns for the conservation of the greater adjutant stork found widely in Assam.
The Princess Royal, who is the patron of the Whitley Fund for Nature(WFN) awarded Purnima on Thursday at the Royal Geographical Society in London. The Green Oscars recognizes contributions to wildlife conservation in lesser-known areas and bring the region into the international eye.
Here, Purnima has been closely working with the local communities in the villages of Dadara, Pachariya and Hingimari villages of Kamrup district. The conservation streak for the greater adjutant stork, also known as hargila is boosted by the same name and is a dedicated army of 70 local women headed by Purnima.
