Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, hub of illegal arm trafficking

Guwahati/ 5th August’2017 (Prag News Desk):Even after the clean sheet of the concerned authorities regarding illegal arms trafficking in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD),the picture of illegal arms and ammunition in the region was seen unchanged.

According to sources, a total of around 35 percent arms and ammunition were recovered from BTAD area in last five years.

However,in comparison to the number of arms recovered, the conviction rate was seen very low, providing a reason of respite to the offenders.

After the assassination of ABMSU leader Lafiqul Islam, the hollow security mechanism in the BTAD dominated districts once again came into light with lots of raising brows..

In 2016, total of 546 arms recovered in entire Assam,of which 200 cases were from BTAD dominated areas, with Kokrajhar being the first with 111 cases followed by Karbi Anglong with a total of 96 such cases.

On the other hand, in the year 2017 a total of 521 illegal ammunition were recovered from the State of which 64 arms were from BTC districts.

Going by the records, it is clearly visible that the scenario of illegal arms movement is all the same for the last few years in BTC.The district of Karbi Anglong has also been witnessing a constant scenario regarding the recovery of arms for the last few years, against which preventive measures were also seen very pathetic in number, after poor condition of conviction rate, said a senior Assam Police officer.

It will be important to mention here that a total of 140 cases registered in Kokrajhar in 2014 and 2016 followed by 95 in Udalguri,64 in Chirang and 46 in Baksa respectively.
