After the Higher Secondary (HS) Final Examination (Arts, Science and Commerce) 2018 candidates of some of the city colleges failed to make it to the top 10 merit lists, the college authorities blamed the poor show on the lack of manpower and further mentioned that teachers are being engaged in government works which keep them away from attending classes.

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council declared the Class 12 results on Thursday. Only three students from Kamrup (metro) managed to secure a place in the merit list in Science and Commerce streams. Unfortunately, no candidate from Arts stream made it to the merit list.

In Commerce stream, Praktisha Bachyas and Mritrika Nath from Gauhati Commerce College secured 9th and 10th positions respectively. On the other hand, Ujjawal Jain from Cotton College (university) secured the 10th position in Science steam.

Nirmali Medhi, Vice Principal of Handique Girls’ College said, “As teachers, we give equal importance to all the students. Now, it’s up to the students on how much they can absorb. This year, the teachers were overloaded with government works apart from attending classes.”

She added, “There have also been times when a post remained vacant for a long period of time. So that way too, it takes a toll on conducting classes and finishing the curriculum on time.”
