Two arrested in suspicion of instigating violence in Chandmari protest

Following clashes between the city police and protestors on Sunday at the city’s Chandmari area, Assam Police arrested two for instigating and attacking the security personnel on duty.

Demanding speedy justice for the two youths from Guwahati who were lynched by an angry mob on Karbi Anglong’s Kacharigaon, on Friday night, thousands of protestors gathered at the Gauhati Commerce College and blocked the busy RG Baruah Road for nearly three hours, leading to a massive traffic jam. Problems arose when police asked the agitators to end their blockade.

Police stated that some protestors started to threw wine bottles and pelt stones at the security personnel and to disperse the crowd, the police had to resort to mile lathicharge. Police also said that few people from the crowd have also damaged public property.

City police have picked up two persons and their role in the Chandmari clash are being probed under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The call for the protest was given by a Facebook post which read “Justice for Nilotpal and Abhijeet”

Meanwhile the State Police have imposed Section 144 CrPC in four major corners of the city which are vulnerable to clashes and communal violence.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Chandran Nath on Sunday stated that his department is closely monitoring the incident and strict action will be taken against the ones inciting violence.
