After a long delay, the Panchayat elections will be held in Assam in the first week of September. This was stated by State Election Commissioner Harendra Nath Bora.
Bora mentioned that the State Election Commission is ready to conduct the polls. The notice for the elections will be issued in August, Bora informed.
Due to the updation process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Panchayat elections were postponed in Assam.
Recently a bench of the Guwahati High Court, headed by AK Goswami has issued an order to conduct the elections on or before September 15.
As per the order by the High Court, till the elections are held, the state government will constitute committees to administer Gaon panchayats, Aanchalik parishads and Zila Parishads.
It may be mentioned, in the past, the Supreme Court had rejected a plea by the State Election Commission to divert the local staff engaged in updating the NRC to poll duties so that they can be engaged in the Panchayat elections.
