Social media posing threat to peace in India: Assam Police

Social media is playing a damaging role in spreading provocative messages, opinions, propaganda in Islamic radicalization of the youths in Assam.

Self-radicalization on cyberspace is equally dangerous. The cross-border import of radical religious ideology along with online radicalization is creating fertile grounds for fundamental forces,” said an Assam Police official on the condition of anonymity.

As far as radicalization is concerned, the top Assam Police official also shared that though “no footprints of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Al Qaeda or similar organisations have been found till now in Assam, the recent appearance of the ISIS flags in Goalpara and Nalbari point towards the “possibility of radical ideology gaining space among certain elements”.

“There is also a large amount of radical content, available on the internet, which is adding to the problem,” the official added.

The official further stated that it is Popular Front of India (PFI) which is acting as a “radicalization and polarization” agent.

“The PFI, which while professing to work for development, is suspiciously acting as an agent of polarization and linkages of Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) is a matter of concern. The emergence of communally provocative pamphlets by the PFI at Goalpara and Karimganj along with inputs regarding local boys joining a JMB linked outfit and news of one joining Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir are warning signals”, said the official.

After the recent sensational incident at Dokmoka where two youths from Guwahati were lynched brutally by a group of angry mob, people across the state. Out of anguish started posting hate messages and communal messages thus inciting disharmony in the state.
