48 hour Assam Bandh declared from July 23 by Janagusthio Oikya Mancha

Demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, the Janagusthiyo Oikya Mancha, a forum comprising organisations of the six communities of Assam, will launch a 48-hour Assam bandh from July 23.

Leaders of the communities – Morans, Muttocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahoms, Sutias and Adivasis or tea tribes – stated that they will hold a demonstration in Guwahati on June 27.

The Manch alleged that he BJP-led Union and state governments had cheated them and betrayed their communities to secure votes.

It may be mentioned that the Union tribal welfare minister Jual Oram said that “scheduling of six communities of Assam is under active consideration of the Centre”.

Earlier, Oram has stated that it takes four decades to grant ST status to a community, and hence “there’s little hope” for fulfilling the demands for ST status. This statement of his created uproar in Assam with groups criticizing the governments for “cheating” them.
