Heavy police patrol is in place at the toll gate on the NH-37 at Rontholi in Raha, one of the major toll gates in the State which was closed down following protests a few years back.

The toll gate is all set to be reopened by the National highway Authority of India (NHAI) on July 12.

Hundreds of protestors, belonging to 12 organizations, staged a demonstration at Raha town on Wednesday protesting against the government’s move to reopen the toll gate.

Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti has been opposing the toll gate in protest against the additional tax since long and due to the intensive protest carried out by the peasant group, the toll gate was shut down in 2014.

The protestors stated that the toll gate does not serve the purpose of any local interest and insisted that the administration resolve the local issues before commissioning the gate.

It may be mentioned that the new toll plaza has been constructed to facilitate toll collection and manage traffic volume. It consists of four lanes dedicated to the Electronic Toll collection (ETC) system and apart from that two free lanes will be there on either side for the local vehicles, as per reports.
