With few days remaining for the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Ripun Bor stated that “several lakhs” of linguistic minority, religious minority and Nepali population will be “deleted from the draft NRC who are not covered under the legal points mentioned at Para-4”.

Bora had sought the intervention of Union home Minister Rajnath Singh the publication of the NRC update in Assam and also shot off a letter. Bora urged Singh to safeguard the constitutional rights of genuine Indian citizens living in Assam.

Bora met Singh at the Parliament House, New Delhi and submitted a memorandum.

“Due to the political interference of the Assam Government, names of several lakhs of Indian citizens will find no place in the draft NRC. The Assam Government wants to misuse the NRC for their political gains by creating religious polarisation,” mentioned Bora in the memorandum.

The first draft of the NRC was published on December 31 (midnight), 2017 and contained names around 1.90 crore people. The final draft will be published on July 30.

He added, “Though the Supreme Court allowed considering the certificates issued by the Gaon Panchayat secretaries as linkage proofs, in case of married women, however, the officers at the NRC Seva Kendra rejected such certificates during verification with certain motive.”

Bora further mentioned that though the applicants submitted documents as per the modalities of the NRC authority is “acting on their whims” in a “partisan manner to drop the names from the draft NRC without proper verification”.

Bora also stated that “anti-social elements” may try to take advantage of the situation to create unrest in Assam by provoking those Indian citizens whose names will be left out in the draft NRC.
