Former Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar, Tapodhir Bhattacharjee was interrogated by Dispur police in connection with an FIR lodged against him.
The FIR was filed against Bhattacharjee by social activist Manash Chaliha for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and communities in Assam. The FIR was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC at the Dispur Police Station on July 8.
Chaliha stated that the former Vice Chancellor made “objectionable” comments in his article regarding the ongoing updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) published in a Bengali newspaper on July 3.
After obtaining interim bail from the Gauhati High Court, he appeared at the Dispur Police Station on July 18. He was questioned by the personnel for around three hours, as per reports.
Bhattacharjee received a lot of criticism for his article titled ‘Asome Bangalir Sarashajya’. It was published in Bengali daily newspaper Aajkal on July 3.
