Tripura:

The North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Chairman and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday stated that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is not required in view of its demography.

The BJP leader was addressing a presser here in Agartala in presence of the office-bearers of the state BJP.

“Going by the demography of Tripura, I don’t think there is any requirement. Assam’s demography has changed,” he said.

He added, “The NRC revision was done in Assam as per the Assam Accord. But inTripura, there is no accord, no cut-off date, neither any way to generate any legacy document.”

Sarma also said that the NRC is Assam is not a major issue as it is not the final one.

The Assam Minister also added that the other states could also try to replicate the Assam model of the NRC after the process was complete.

It may be mentioned that the post the publication of the complete draft of the NRC in Assam, the different political parties in Tripura, including BJP’s ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) have been demanding an NRC exercise in the state.

Sarma, who is the Assam Finance Minister, also mentioned that the rate of excluded persons from the draft NRC will decrease “drastically” once people start to file for claims and objections.

Besides the IPFT, the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) and the National Conference of Tripura (NCT) had demanded an NRC exercise in the state. The IPFT had also said that it would organise a massive rally at Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), on August 23 on the issue.

The Assam government released the second and final draft of NRC on July 30. 2,89,83,677 persons were found eligible out of 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final sraft of the NRC. Names of 4,007,707 people were not included in the final Draft NRC. The persons whose names didn’t figure in the complete draft can apply for Claims and Objections from August 10.
