5 Yoga Asanas for Better Respiratory Health

Your lungs will stay healthy and robust if you practise yoga regularly. Pranayama and other yogic postures can help activate and develop the lungs in the most natural way possible.

With omicrons raging and about to peak in the country, paying attention to your respiratory health in the present COVID_19 atmosphere is critical. Here are some yoga asanas to strengthen your lungs.

Benefits: Improves blood circulation. Increases oxygenation in the body. Lungs are strengthened.

  1. Sit up straight in a relaxed posture.
  2. Resting both hands on the knees, bring together the thumb and forefinger.
  3. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
  4. Inhale deeply (only when you begin), contract the abdominal muscles, exhaling through both nostrils, and forcing the air out.
  5. Inhalation should take place passively. There should be automatic relaxation of the abdominal muscles.
  6. After completing 20 rapid breaths, resume normal breathing pace. This is one complete round.

Anulom Vilom

Benefit: Clears nasal passages. Increases oxygenation. Helps in a relaxing mind.

  1. Sit straight with legs crossed.
  2. Rest your wrists on your knees.
  3. Fold the middle and index fingers of your right hand toward your palm.
  4. Place your right thumb on the right nostril and your ring finger on the left.
  5. Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale slowly and deeply with your left nostril until your lungs are full. Keep your attention on your breathing.
  6. Release your thumb and use your ring finger to seal your left nostril.
  7. Slowly exhale through your right nostril.
  8. Reverse the procedure, breathing through the right nostril and exhaling through the left.


Benefit: Stretches neck and back muscles. Open chest for deeper breathing.

  1. Lie flat on your stomach, face down.
  2. Keep your hands beside your rib cage with palms flat on the ground.
  3. Press your palms into the floor and inhale deeply. Lift your upper body (head, neck, shoulders, and upper chest) off the ground.
  4. Keep your breathing normal and steady.
  5. Hold this position for 30 seconds.


Benefit: Opens up the chest, Leaves you refreshed and rejuvenated.

  1. Lie on your back.
  2. Place your hands under your hips, palms down.
  3. Left the head and neck up.
  4. Keeping your chest elevated, touch the top of your head to the ground.
  5. Hold this position for as long as you can, breathing deeply.
  6. Relax.


Benefit: Improves blood circulation. Relaxes neck and spine.

  1. Inhale and raise the arms over the head.
  2. Exhale and fold forward. Allow the arms to hang.
  3. Grab the opposite elbow and form a square with the arms.
  4. Allow the head and neck to hang and breathe deeply, relaxing in the pose.

Without strong lungs, breathing is impossible. With yoga poses, we may address any lung-related diseases and ailments and strengthen our lungs.
