Digital Desk: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has seized more than 85 lakh litres of liquor from five states that held elections in February and March, with Punjab accounting for roughly 70% of the entire haul.
As per the Election Commission of India estimates, drugs worth Rs 575.39 crore were seized, making it the largest chunk of seizures in terms of monetary value.
Notably, during the elections, the poll panel employed flying squads and static surveillance teams to monitor the flow of cash, liquor, narcotics, freebies, and precious metals.
Reportedly, total seizures made during the polls in the five states amounted to Rs 1,061.87 crores, which is more than three-and-a-half times the 299.84 crores worth of seizures made by the poll authority in the five states during the 2017 elections.
Since the polls were announced on January 8, a total of 85,27,227 litres of liquor had been seized in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur, reports said.
Punjab stood first, with 59,65,496 litres worth Rs 36.79 crore, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 22,94,614 litres worth Rs 62.13 crore, Uttarakhand (97,176 litres worth 4.79 crores), Goa (95,446 litres worth 3.57) and Manipur (74,495 litres worth 73 lakh).
Punjab accounted for 376.19 crores of the 575.39 crores in drugs confiscated from the five states, followed by Manipur (143.78 crores), Uttar Pradesh (48.48 crores), Uttarakhand (5.66 crores), and Goa (1.28) crore.
