Digital Desk: Amazon was chastised by a portion of Indian social media users on Monday for selling products featuring images of the Indian flag, including garments and food items. Some claimed that doing so was an insult and a violation of the country’s flag code.
On the Amazon.in website, users posted photos of clothes, cups, keychains, and chocolates that bear images or imprints of the tricolour and demanded that they should be banned. Following which hashtags like #AmazonInsultsNationalFlag were trending on Twitter.
However, Amazon did not respond to the comments till now.
Moreover, some social media users pointed out that the usage of tricolour on items is prohibited by the Flag Code of India, 2002.
While some social media users claimed that such use was an insult to the national flag, others claimed that it was a cheap way to increase sales and that it would not increase Indian residents’ patriotism.
“The flag may not be worn as part of a costume or uniform of any kind. In addition, cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, and boxes may not be embroidered or printed with it.” according to the Code.
This isn’t the first time Amazon has been chastised. After a major protest from India, Amazon was compelled to remove doormats bearing the Indian flag from its Canadian website in 2017.
