Assam: GMC Poll to be rescheduled for Rongali Bihu

The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) state unit has requested that the State Election Commission (SEC) to postpone the upcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election.

Digital Desk: Objection from BJP Party, with its ally the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and protest from the Congress Party may pressurize the state election commission to reschedule the election for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) as the polling date falls in the mid-April and is also state's biggest festival, Bihu, is celebrated. Rongali or Bohag Bihu is a seven-day festival in Assam's Brahmaputra Valley, with each day having its importance.

Assam's state election commissioner, Alok Kumar, told TOI that the commission should keep a close eye on the situation and may reach a final decision. "We'll wait a couple of days to see if there's an agreement among political parties on the call for the election to be postponed." "In this regard, we have received memorandums from two political parties," Kumar stated.

He claimed that no one brought up the topic of the seven-day Bihu celebration while planning the election calendar. "Because of Rongali Bihu, the holidays are only three days long." However, since the topic of a seven-day celebration has arisen, and if most mainstream political parties want a date change, we will examine it," Kumar added.

According to commission sources, the dates for nominations, vetting, and withdrawal of nominations may not be changed even if the election calendar is adjusted. "Only the polling date, which corresponds with Rongali Bihu's seven-day period, may be adjusted," the insider stated.

On Saturday, the ruling party petitioned the state election commission to rearrange the Assam elections while Congress staged a protest in the capital. Apurba Bhattacharjee, the General Secretary of the Assam PCC, questioned, "How can employees and voters be deprived of the right to celebrate Bihu when seeking their parents' blessings? For seven days, many people return to their hometown to celebrate the holiday ".

Meanwhile, the Assam PCC released the names of candidates for 55 of the 60 wards on Saturday. "Among the prominent leaders fielded by the Congress are Avijit Mazumdar, chairman of the state congress's linguistic minorities cell, and Swapan Das, President of the Congress's Guwahati City District Committee," Bhattacharjee stated ".
