Assembly Election 2022: Former State Congress Chief Joins BJP

Digital Desk: Giving another blow to the Congress ahead of the assembly election, former chief of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee Kishore Upadhyay joined the Bharatiya Janata Party today (January 27), as per reports.

Reportedly, Upadhyay is likely to field from the Tehri constituency in the forthcoming assembly election.

The news came after the Congress suspended Kishore Upadhyay from main membership for six years on Wednesday, accusing him of engaging in "anti-party activities."

According to Uttarakhand, in a letter to Upadhyay, PCC in-charge Devender Yadav stated that the expulsion came after many warnings to Upadhyay.

In a letter to him, Devender Yadav had accused Upadhyay of "hobnobbing" with the BJP and other political parties.

"Maladministration, misgovernance, and all-around corruption, helped and enabled by the BJP leadership, have sparked popular outrage. Each of us has a solemn responsibility to rise to the occasion and serve Uttarakhand's Devbhumi as well as its people. Regrettably, you have been rubbing shoulders with the BJP and other political parties in order to undermine this fight and damage the people's cause." Yadav said.

Upadhyay was the president of the Congress' Uttarakhand unit from 2014 to 2017. He was a former MLA who won the Tehri assembly constituency in 2002 and 2007. During the latter's visit to the state earlier this month, he met with the BJP's election in charge for Uttarakhand, Pralhad Joshi. After that, the prospect of Upadhyay joining the saffron party has sparked curiosity.

Uttarakhand's Assembly election is set for February 14. On March 10, the results will be announced.
