Centre fails to execute what's being intended for AFSPA in Nagaland

Digital Desk: The wounds of people in Nagaland remain fresh in their minds. The tragic incident of misusing the power under AFSPA took the lives of at least 14 civilians and one soldier in a counter-insurgency operation. The security forces mistakenly shot civilians in Oting village in Nagaland's Mon district on December 4, 2021.

This incident has brought severe concern among the people of Nagaland and the implementation of AFSPA in the state. The unity of people and all organizations in Nagaland has paved the way for the Centre with the proposal to withdraw the Act.

Interestingly, there were talks and discussions by the Centre regarding the issue. Even Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 23 said that a committee would be formed to present a report for three months concerning the possible withdrawal of the Act from the state.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio said to the media that the committee would be governed by the additional secretary (North East) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

However, today the extension of AFSPA for another six months in Nagaland has brought uneasiness among the people and local bodies of the state. It makes no sense to extend the Act when a committee was already formed to submit a review report within 45 days. This decision by the Centre only shows how the central government has failed to execute what they intend to do for the people.

The sudden extension of AFSPA in Nagaland has only set examples for the people to call the Centre- crafty governance. Does this also indicate that the leaders representing the state in the central platform failed to deliver the sentiments of its people? Or Does this indicate the negligence of the Centre towards the sentiments of people in Nagaland and their rights?

AFSPA was implemented to bring peace and harmony in any region that suffers insurgency. However, AFSPA lately turned out to be a reason that has violated human rights.
