Modi government has committed treason: Rahul Gandhi on Pegasus Issue

Digital Desk: Rahul Gandhi slammed the Centre on Saturday in response to a revelation alleging that the Indian government purchased the Pegasus spy technology in 2017 as part of a deal with Israel, claiming that the ‘Modi Government has committed treason.’

The Congress politician accused the Narendra Modi government of buying Pegasus to spy on the prominent institutions of our democracy, leaders, and the public.

“Pegasus was purchased by the Modi government to spy on our major democratic institutions, lawmakers, and the general people. These phone taps were directed at government officials, opposition leaders, the military forces, and the judiciary. This is treasonous behaviour. The Modi administration has committed treason.” he tweeted.

The Israeli spyware Pegasus and a missile system were the centerpieces of an approximately USD 2-billion transaction of advanced weaponry and intelligence gear between India and Israel in 2017, according to a report in the New York Times.

Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge, the opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha, and Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala claimed at a press conference that the Modi government is the deployer and executor of the illegal and unconstitutional snooping and espionage racket.

“This is a brazen hijack of democracy and an act of treason.” Congress stated in a press release.

Last year, an international investigative consortium reported that the NSO Group’s phone hacking software had targeted several persons, including Indian ministers, legislators, activists, businesses, and journalists.

However, the government has refuted all the claims levelled against them in the case.

Following that, the Supreme Court established a three-member independent expert group to investigate the suspected use of Pegasus in India for targeted monitoring.
