Over 3 lakh children aged 12-14 years were vaccinated against covid-19 on Day 1: Health Ministry

According to data from the Health Ministry, as of March 1, 2021, there were 4.7 crore children aged 12 and 13 in the country.

Digital Desk: The Union Health Ministry on Thursday (March 17) announced that over 3 lakh children aged 12 to 14 years old had got their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, bringing the total doses administered in the country to over 180.80 crores.

The vaccination drive for children aged 12 to 14 years began on Wednesday. This age group will receive two doses of Biological E's intramuscular vaccine Corbevax, which will be given 28 days apart.

According to data from the Health Ministry, as of March 1, 2021, there were 4.7 crore children aged 12 and 13 in the country.

Moreover, over 2.15 crore covid-19 vaccination precaution doses have been given to healthcare personnel and frontline workers, as well as individuals over the age of 60.

India's vaccination campaign began on January 16, last year, with healthcare staff being the first to be administered and frontline workers vaccination beginning from February 2.

This is followed by the next phase of covid-19 vaccination, which began on March 1 last year for persons over 60 years old and those aged 45 and up with certain co-morbid disorders.

From April 1 of last year, the country began vaccination for all people above the age of 45, and on May 1 of last year, the government decided to broaden its vaccination campaign by enabling anybody over the age of 18 to be inoculated against the viral disease.

Meanwhile, according to data issued today by the Ministry of Health, India registered 2,539 new Covid-19 cases and 60 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death tally to 5,16,132. The total number of current cases is 30,799. Today, 4,491 recoveries were made in the country, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 4,24,54,546.

According to the ministry, the active cases make just 0.07 percent of the total caseload, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to 98.73 percent.

On Tuesday, urging countries to remain cautious against the virus, WHO stated that numbers showing a global increase in Covid-19 infections could signal a far bigger problem because some countries report a decline in testing rates.

Further, WHO added that after a month of reduction in Covid-19 cases, it began to rise around the world last week with lockdowns in Asia and China's Jilin province.

According to the WHO, the increases were caused by a mix of causes, including the highly transmissible Omicron variation and its BA.2 sublineage, as well as the raising of public health and social policies.

"These increases are occurring despite declines in testing in some countries, which implies that the cases we're witnessing are only the tip of the iceberg," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's director-general, told reporters.
