Russia-India Crises:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Hold Emergency Meeting Today

Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other officials today at evening to discuss the economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine situation and strategies to reduce the impact of rising crude oil prices, government sources said.

After President Vladimir Putin authorized what he dubbed a unique military operation, Russian forces fired missiles at numerous cities in Ukraine and landed troops on the country’s coast in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Sitharaman stated that she would meet PM Modi to discuss the situation stemming from the Russia-Ukraine crisis. When asked if there will be a meeting with the Prime Minister on the Russia-Ukraine issue, she replied, “absolutely.”

Notably, Russia’s attack on Ukraine has shaken the markets. The 30-share benchmark Sensex fell almost 2,700 points today, mirroring a global catastrophe in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Indian embassy in Ukraine had previously stated that special flights to Kyiv to pick up Indian nationals had been cancelled due to the country’s airspace closure.

After an Air India flight was forced to return to Delhi due to Ukraine’s blocked airspace, India is now seeking for alternate routes to evacuate its citizens.

Meanwhile, sources indicated that high-level talks are taking place at the Ministry of External Affairs to draw up contingency measures and establish alternate evacuation routes.

According to MEA sources, more Russian-speaking staff have been dispatched to India’s embassy in Ukraine and are being deployed in Ukraine’s neighbouring nations.

Moreover, the Indian embassy has issued a set of guidelines for the students and others living in the country.

“Citizens going to Kyiv, including those travelling from western areas of Kyiv, are encouraged to return to their respective towns temporarily, particularly to safer places along with the bordering western countries,” the Indian embassy warned.
