Digital Desk: Sadhguru set off on a 30,000-kilometer motorcycle tour across Europe and the Middle East en route to India, starting in London’s Parliament Square.
The 64-year-old yoga guru donned his biking gear for the 100-day tour, which will take him to Amsterdam, Berlin, and Prague on a BMW K1600 GT motorcycle this week.
After several programs in key cities along the way, he plans to return to New Delhi in 75 days to commemorate India’s 75th year of independence.
“It is essential that we act immediately. I’ve been talking about this for over 24 years, but a solution can only come about if every country has a positive policy,” Before starting the bike tour, Sadhguru spoke to reporters at the Indian High Commission.
“It’s still snowing in many parts of Europe, and we’ll be riding our bikes through it. It’s not exactly a joy ride at this age. So, what am I doing? Because, in the last 20 years, over 300,000 farmers have committed suicide. This is happening all over the world, not just in India... one of the biggest concerns is soil depletion,” he said.
The Save Soil Movement, which was launched as part of the spiritual leader’s Conscious Planet initiative, seeks to draw the world’s attention to dying soil and growing desertification.
The goal is to persuade countries to implement national policies to increase the organic content of cultivable soil.
“If we are to play well, whether on the cricket field or in life, we must have good soil. It’s time to join together and make things right. Let’s make it happen, shall we?,” Sadhguru said during a visit to the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground for a meeting with Middlesex Cricket Club (MCC) as part of his tour in the United Kingdom.
The campaign, which is supported by the World Food Programme and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, urges governments worldwide to prioritize soil regeneration.
“No matter how much wealth, education, or money we have, our children will not be able to live comfortably unless we restore the water and soil. The only way forward is Conscious Planet,” Sadhguru made the remarks last week at the University of Birmingham.
His lone motorcycle journey concludes on June 21st, just in time for the Summer Solstice, at the Cauvery Calling project, which allows the planting of 2.42 billion trees in private farmlands in the Cauvery river basin to restore the severely depleted river and revitalize the soil.
As per United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), over 90% of the world’s soil could be degraded by 2050, resulting in catastrophic crises such as food and water scarcity, droughts and famines, adverse climate change, mass migrations, and unprecedented rates of species extinction.
The Save Soil campaign aims to persuade at least 3.5 billion people, or 60% of the global electorate, to support long-term government policies to help revive soil and reverse its depletion.
