Digital Desk: India’s Late Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, brother Colonel (retd) Vijay Rawat joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday in the presence of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other top party officials at New Delhi.
The news comes just hours after the retired colonel met with Uttarakhand, chief minister in Delhi, sparking speculation that he will join the BJP ahead of the impending Assembly elections in Uttarakhand.
Earlier, when asked about joining the BJP, Vijay Rawat said, “If they ask, I will serve the people of Uttarakhand.”
After formally joining the BJP party, the retired colonel said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and far-reaching thoughts encouraged him and others to work hard for the country.”
Announcing it, BJP tweeted, “Late Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat’s brother retired Colonel Vijay Rawat joins BJP at party headquarters in New Delhi.”
While addressing a press conference, the retired colonel said, “I am thankful to the party leaders that it gives me the opportunity to join BJP. After retirement, my father joined the BJP, and now I have the opportunity to do the same.”
“Dhami’s goals for the state matches with what my brother (the late CDS) had in mind.” he added.
On December 8, CDS Bipin Rawat, a native of Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal, died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, along with 13 others, including his wife, Madhulika.
On the other hand, the Uttarakhand assembly election is scheduled to be held on February 14. On March 10, the votes will be counted.
