Thiruvananthapuram: Adani Group today officially took over the charges and management of Thiruvananthapuram international airport. The company Adani Trivandrum International Airport Limited (ATIAL) is all ready to handle the airport.
As per the contract, the firm will provide the airport authority Rs 168 for each traveller at the airport. Senior officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group attended the function at the airport.
The Adani group had proposed subcontracts for plans to extend the facilities in the airport. Therefore, the airport will open brand-new duty-free stores, food shops, and retail stores.
Last year, the Kerala Assembly consistently passed a declaration protesting airport privatisation. The Central Government and the AAI had gone forward to lease out the airport to the Adani Group. They have ignored the Kerala Government’s complaints.
Therefore, the State Government and Airport Authority Employees Union filed a case aginst the takeover. They are against handing over of the airport to Adani Group. Also, the Airports Authority of India staff is provided with a transfer option.
Thiruvananthapuram airport was established in 1932. The airport got the tag of being an international airport in 1991.
