Assam police arrests 552 illegal land brokers in 24 hours

GUWAHATI: After the ‘war on drugs’, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led Assam government is now up in arms against land brokers to free the state from the menace of illegal land broking activities.

In one of the operation against those involved in such activities, Assam police arrested a total of 552 illegal land brokers from across the state over the past 24 hours.

The highest number of 52 arrest was made in Kamrup district followed by 41 in Barpeta, 35 in Kamrup (M), 33 in Biswanath, 31 in Nalbari, 26 in Hojai, 27 in Morigaon, 22 each in Kokrajhar and Nagaon, 20 in Dhubri, 17 each in Dibrugarh and Bajali, 16 in Karimganj, 15 in Jorhat,  14 each in Bongaigaon, Baksa and Golaghat, 13 in Lakhimpur, 12 each in Sonitpur, Hailakandi and Cachar, 11 in Darrang, three each in Udalguri, Karbi Anglong, Sadiya and Dhemaji, and one in Tinsukia districts.   

More arrests are likely to be made soon as the police have another list of about 700 names of people involved in similar activities.

Earlier this month, CM Sarma had warned of stern action against those involved in illegal land broking activities.

He made it clear that middlemen must be eliminated from the system and people should get empowered to get their land-related works done with ease.

Meanwhile, Sarma urged people not to approach land brokers to get their land related works done even if it takes to time get it done directly from the concerned offices.
