Bengaluru best city for jobs & economic growth, Assam stands at bottom

New Delhi: NITI Aayog, in his latest list of Urban Index Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), reported that Bengaluru is the only city in the country that provides good jobs and ensures economic growth.

However, Shimla topped the sustainable development index based on 15 parameters.

As per the list, Shimla secured the first rank with a score of 76, followed by Coimbatore with 73, Thiruvananthapuram (72.36), Chandigarh (72.36) and Kochi (72.29).

Sadly, Guwahati stands in the bottom five with 56 on the sustainable development list.

On the other hand, the other worst scorer was Dhanbad with 52, Meerut (55), Itanagar (55) and Patna (57).

The score list set by the NITI Aayog is- cities scoring between 65 and 99 were called as a ‘front runner’, cities with 50-64 were called ‘performers’ and cities scoring below 50 were called ‘aspirants.

NITI Aayog launched the SDG Urban Index & Dashboard (2021-22) on November 23, 2021. In the SDG framework, it ranks 56 urban areas on 77 SDG indicators across targets like zero hunger, ending poverty, quality education, good health and well-being, gender equality, etc.

Out of the total 56 urban areas ranked in the index, 44 have more than one million of population. Twelve are state capitals having a population of less than one million.

Notably, the report by NITI Aayog comes when the Assam government is beating the drums of generating employment in the state. The report has shaken the people after it stands in the bottom five.

During the election campaign, BJP announced that it would create five lakh jobs in five years if it came to power. Additionally, they announced that soon after they come to power immediately, they will give one lakh jobs to the state population.

However, on the contrary, till today, they didn’t create a single job leaving all the promises in pen and paper-like other promises they had made to the public ahead of the Assam assembly election.
