Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani arrested by Assam police over Tweet on PM Modi

After hearing of his arrest, Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor and other Congress officials raced to Ahmedabad airport, shouting anti-BJP chants.

Digital Desk: Assam Police arrested Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani late last night and was taken to Assam this morning from Ahmedabad. He was reportedly arrested after a BJP leader in Assam filed a complaint about a now-deleted post about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Jignesh Mevani was arrested from a Circuit House in Palanpur around 11.30 pm on Wednesday, after which he was taken to Ahmedabad.

The complaint was lodged against him by Arup Kumar Dey, a BJP politician from Kokrajhar, Assam.

"According to a document provided by Assam police officials, an FIR has been filed in connection with a tweet sent by Mevani a few days ago. Twitter, on the other hand, has delayed the tweet. It has something to do with Nathuram Godse. Mevani was initially transported by car to Ahmedabad and then by plane to Assam early this morning," PTI reported quoting Suresh Jat, Mevani's assistant.

After hearing of his arrest, Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor and other Congress officials raced to Ahmedabad airport, shouting anti-BJP chants.

Mevani is an independent MLA who supported the Congress last year as a Dalit politician and convenor of the political group Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch. He is a former journalist, an MLA from Gujarat's Vadgam, and a lawyer-activist.

Due to the request by authorities, Twitter deleted the post of Mevani on April 18.

Earlier, Mevani, along with political activist and former JNU students' union leader Kanhaiya Kumar, held a press conference with Congress's Rahul Gandhi in September last year, where Kumar joined the party and Mevani extended his support to Gandhi until the end of his term as an independent MLA, after which he would join the Congress.
