Digital Desk: In a case involving a tweet about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was granted bail by an Assam court on Monday. A local court in Kokrajhar sent him to one day of judicial imprisonment on Sunday.
Mevani was arrested in Gujarat's Palanpur town on Wednesday night after an FIR was lodged in Kokrajhar Police Station under several sections of the IPC and the IT Act. On Thursday morning, he was flown from Gujarat to Guwahati and then taken to Korajhar.
Mevani's office stated in a statement that Assam police arrested him from the Palanpur circuit House at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday. After learning of his arrest, Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor and other Congress leaders rushed to Ahmedabad Airport and raised anti-BJP slogans.
According to Mevani's assistant Suresh Jat, he was arrested after an FIR under section 153A of the IPC, which deals with offences linked to promoting hatred amongst communities, was filed at the Kokrajhar police station in Assam.
While the police did not give a reason for his detention, Mevani's close aide alleged that the Mevani was detained because of his tweet on Mahatma Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse, citing a document shared by the Assam police.
Mevani was elected as an Independent MLA from Banaskantha's Vadgam (SC) constituency in 2017 with the help of Congress, even though he is "ideologically" with Congress at the moment as he has not officially joined the opposing party.
