Navjot Sidhu Sentenced To One Year in Jail in 1988 road rage case

The former Punjab Congress president, Navjot Singh Sidhu, was previously fined Rs 1,000 by the Supreme Court.

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court sentenced Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year in prison on Thursday in a 1988 road rage case in which one person was killed.

The apex court previously fined the former Punjab Congress president Rs 1,000. While hearing a petition submitted by the victim’s relatives, the Supreme Court expanded the term of punishment.

Last month, the Supreme Court postponed ruling on a petition seeking a harsher penalty for the former minister, such as culpable homicide or murder, rather than just causing harm.

“There is no solid proof to substantiate that the single fist strike led to the deaths of a 65-year-old man,” the cricketer-turned-politician told the Supreme Court. He also blamed the victim’s family for trying to revive the case in a “malicious manner.”

“As there was no evidence whatsoever that the single blow caused the death by the answering respondent (even assuming the incident did take place), this honourable court rightly concluded that the same would fall under Section 323 IPC,” Sidhu’sSidhu’s affidavit before the court stated.
