Digital Desk: WhatsApp appears to be experiencing a bug, as several users are reporting problems sending and receiving texts on the programme. Downdetector, a service that records global outages, has seen a significant increase in the number of people reporting WhatsApp's outages.
Downdetector is claiming a significant increase, with over 6000 reports available. Users report that their messages are not being delivered. Even when the messages are delivered, the app does not display the delivery status.
At 12.07 p.m., the popular online programme Down Detector began reporting unusually high "trouble reports," and by 1 p.m., it had listed thousands of such reports. The majority of reports (69%) were about messages not being delivered, while some claimed server disconnections and the app failing completely.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks real-time difficulties and outages, user reports indicate that WhatsApp has been experiencing issues since 3:17 AM EDT (12:47 pm). It goes on to say that about 3,432 individuals have already reported the issue on their website.
Users on social media in Italy and Turkey also reported being unable to send messages.
The company stated that it is attempting to restore it.
"We're aware that some individuals are presently experiencing difficulties sending messages, and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as soon as possible," said a spokeswoman for Meta, the company that also owns Facebook and Instagram in addition to WhatsApp.
As this is a developing story, more information will be added.
