In a major development by the Guwahati Transport Department, vehicles older than15 years will be banned from Guwahati in order to counter the rising level of pollution in Guwahati.
The decision was taken on Saturday by the Guwahati Transport Department.
According to reports, all the vehicles registered in Guwahati will have to change their number plates to High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) by May 21 and further, the department has banned all the vehicles older than 15 years to run in the city.
A total of 9,95,265 vehicles will have to change their current registration plate with HSRP.
Drivers seeking a license will have to undergo a specific test.
Vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped due to the pollution norms but it is yet to be ascertained which vehicle will fall under this rule.
The plates will be installed on the vehicles to increase the protection against theft. It may be mentioned that HSRP was made mandatory in many states at least 13 years ago but it was not implemented fully. Now, the transport department is taking steps to make the HSRP compulsory for the vehicles.
