Delhi Government tasks 15 boats for removal of toxic foam from Yamuna river

New Delhi: After facing criticism about Chhath puja devotees taking a dip in the polluted froth-filled river in the national capital, the Delhi government has engaged 15 boats to remove the toxic foam due to the rise in pollution.

The concern from the government came after environmentalists, political parties, and the people of Delhi have raised concerns over the hazardous situation.

“Delhi government has deployed 15 boats to remove the foam forming in the Yamuna due to increasing pollution,” a government official said.

Reportedly, ahead of Sandhya Arghya on the third day of the Chhath puja, devotees take a dip in the holy water and worship the sun; boats were put to clear off toxic foam from the river.

The official added that the idea entailed tying a strong cloth between two boats; the foam will be brought out to the shore.

As per reports, the toxic foam floating on the Yamuna river is the repercussion of increased ammonia levels and high phosphate content caused by the discharge of industrial pollutants, including detergents, into the river.
