Desperate measures: Afghans handing over their babies, toddlers to the US soldiers at Kabul Border

Kabul: The terrifying vision that has emerged following the Taliban’s takeover in Kabul has beamed into homes around the world. Horrifying scenes unfolded at the Kabul airport as hundreds of people tried to desperately escape the Taliban takeover.

Images showed hundreds of Afghans packed into US military transport planes, showed even more running alongside the C-17 cargo plane, desperate to flee. Seven people died in the chaos, said US officials, including those who plunged to their deaths after trying to hold on to the military jet as it took off. Thousands also swarmed outside the airport fence. Videos showed a large number of Afghans pushing up against the barbed wire that separates hope from an uncertain future under the Taliban regime. Among the group, an infant child been passed through the crowd seemingly headed toward border officials at the gates of Kabul airport.

“People are so desperate to escape the Taliban that they’re passing babies and kids forward to the gate at Kabul airport,” said one user who shared the footage online. The scene was so devastating that the soldiers had been driven to tears, said a senior British official.

“It was terrible, women were throwing their babies over the razor wire, asking the soldiers to take them, some got caught in the wire,” the officer told. “I’m worried for my men, I’m counseling some, everyone cried last night.” He detailed the terrifying plight one woman made, adding that it was a situation many mothers were facing in Afghanistan. In shock and tears, she arrived with her four-year-old daughter in her arms and told officials her husband had joined the Taliban and was beating her. “Afghanistan is Taliban. Taliban is a terrorist. My husband is a terrorist Talib,” she explained.

Asked where she would go, “America, Canada, France, me and just my daughter …” she said. “Anywhere, any country.”
