A large number of students, including from outside the state, have secured admissions in the MBBS and Engineering courses in Assam by using fake Scheduled Caste (SC) certificates. This was stated by the Asom Anusuchit Jati Yuba Chatra Santha (AAJYCS).
The AAJYCS is an organization working for the rights of SC people in Assam.
While addressing the media on Tuesday, the AAJUCS asked chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to weed out fake certificates through the state-level caste scrutiny committee in the state at the earliest. The Santha also reminded Sonowal about the renewal of Scheduled Caste certificates.
The Santha alleged that every year, hundreds of seats in the engineering and medical educational institutions are allotted to fake SC certificate holders. The members of the Santha also alleged that the children of senior government employees are also availing scholarships to study in educational institutions outside the state by submitting fake SC certificates.
Although a total of 49 seats are reserved for the SC students in the MBBS category, only 10 seats are “fairly obtained by the genuine reserved category students”, alleged the organization. “Due to this reason, most of the eligible students of the state are deprived of getting admissions into the medical colleges. The non-SC people have managed to get admissions in the medical colleges in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tezpur and Silchar,” said the Santha.
