Digital Desk: The Avatar sequel is officially here! Thirteen years after Avatar was launched in 2009, its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in India on December 16.
Avatar, directed by James Cameron, was the highest-grossing film of all time, generating $2.9 billion globally. According to trade estimates, Avatar: The Way of Water is on the same route as it opened in Indian theatres with a stunning Rs 38 crore. As a result, the picture has become the second-biggest Hollywood opener of all time in India.
In India, Avatar: The Way of Water is off to a strong start at the box office. According to early estimates, the James Cameron-directed film made between Rs 38.50 and Rs 40.50 crore on its first day of release on December 16. This makes Avatar 2 the second-highest opening weekend in Indian history. The first was the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, which grossed Rs 53.10 crore on its first day of release.
Avatar 2 revenue was mostly driven by South Indian regions such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. They earned Rs 22 crore in total.
