Supreme Court Asks To Change The Name Of The Movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi'

Digital Desk: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut, Gangubai Kathiawadi, has been dogged by controversy since its announcement. Now, in light of pending cases against the film, the Supreme Court has proposed a title change to the makers of Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.

The film Gangubai Kathiawadi, selected for world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022, is scheduled to be release on February 25 in the theatres. However, the Supreme Court has purportedly advised a name change in light of a plethora of pending cases attempting to halt Gangubai Kathiawadi’s release. Bhansali Productions’ lawyer, Siddhartha Dave, has pledged in the court to consider the suggestion with his client. The hearing has been postponed till tomorrow.

Among the other several cases filed against the film, one is by the adopted son of Gangubai, Babu Raoji Shah.

Babu Raoji Shah, speaking to a news agency, said, “My mother was forced to become a prostitute. People have started saying strange things about my mother.”

Moreover, the usage of the area name in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ was also challenged in the Bombay High Court by Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel, a Kamathipura native.

Ajay Devgn, Parth Samthaan, Shantanu Maheshwari, and Seema Pahwa feature alongside Alia Bhatt in Gangubai Kathiawadi. The film’s story revolves around Ganga, who moves from Gujarat to Mumbai with her partner and gets sold and forced into prostitution. She subsequently becomes Gangubai, a madame in Kamathipura’s red-light area. The film chronicles her ascent to prominence and fighting one challenge after another.
