Akshay Kumar steps back as tobacco brand ambassador after facing backlash

The commercial generated a strong reaction on the internet as soon as it went viral.

Digital Desk: After facing strong criticism for his involvement with a renowned pan masala manufacturing company, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar apologised for endorsing a tobacco brand and said he would 'step down' as its brand ambassador.

On Twitter, the Bollywood superstar published a statement in which he wrote, "I am sorry. I would like to apologise to you, all my fans and well-wishers. Your reaction over the past few days has deeply affected me. While I have not and will not endorse tobacco, I respect the outpouring of your feelings in light of my association with Vimal Elaichi. With all humility, I step back."

After being heavily trolled for his association with the biggest pan masala brand, the leading Bollywood star issued an apology. He also stated that the entire endorsement fee would be donated to a good cause.

"I have decided to contribute the entire endorsement fee towards a worthy cause. The brand might continue airing the ads till the legal duration of the contract that is binding upon me, but I promise to be extremely mindful in making my future choices. In return, I shall forever continue to ask for your love and wishes," Akshay Kumar added.

The criticism occurred after the actor was seen in the iconic 'elaichi pan masala' commercial alongside other Bollywood superstars- Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan.

The commercial generated a strong reaction on the internet as soon as it went viral. While some were critical of the actor for sharing screen time with the tobacco company, others were pleased to see the three top stars in one commercial.
