Digital Desk: James Cameron's Avatar will return to theatres on September 23 in upgraded 4K High Dynamic Range format, Disney and 20th Century announced on Wednesday (August 24). The re-release of the epic sci-fi film comes three months before the premiere of its highly anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, on December 16.
Avatar, starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, will be available for a "two-week limited engagement."
The new trailer for the 2009 film was shared on Tuesday by the official 20th Century Twitter handle.
"On September 23 #Avatar returns to the big screen for a limited time only. Watch the new trailer now," read the tweet by the studio.
Cameron's Avatar became the highest-earning film of all time at the global box office, grossing more than USD 2.8 billion. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best film and best director, and won three, for outstanding cinematography, production design, and visual effects.
A special extended theatrical re-release of Avatar in 2010 that was only available in 3D theatres and IMAX 3D brought in USD 44 million globally. The movie's re-release in China at the beginning of the year earned USD 57.7 million.
According to Deadline, Disney+ has pulled Avatar ahead of its theatrical re-release. However, it will return to the studio's streaming platform shortly before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water.
The film will continue to be available for digital rental on other OTT platforms, including Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. The first teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water was released in early May, shortly after CinemaCon, the annual conference of theatre owners.
Worthington and Saldana return to their roles as Jake Sully and Na'vi Neytiri, respectively, as the tale centres on the two main protagonists, their families, and the lengths they go to protect one other.
Avatar: The Way of Water will also see the return of Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch. Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet, who had previously acted in James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster Titanic, are among the newcomers.
