Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty calls RRR 'gay love story'; netizens reacts

Digital Desk: Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, who has contributed to some of the biggest Indian movies over the years, referred to SS Rajamouli's masterpiece RRR as a "gay love story" on social media. Additionally, he claimed that Alia Bhatt was used in the film as a prop, which also features Ram Charan and Jr. NTR in pivotal roles.  Resul's reply has drawn hateful responses from the public, who also stated that they didn't anticipate such a statement from an Oscar winner.

Based on the lives of two real-life revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, played by Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, respectively, RRR is a fictional drama set in the 1920s before India became independent. While critics and viewers praised the movie, many others were unimpressed. Munish Bharadwaj, an actor and writer referred to RRR as "trash" in a tweet on Sunday. Resul replied to his tweet by writing, "gay love story."

Although Resul disabled the option to reply to his message, fans quoted his tweet and stated that they did not expect such a reply from an Oscar winner. "Not expected this from an Oscar winner (sic)," one user wrote. "There is no shame & harm even if it's that kind of story #LGBT. Did not expect such low comments from an Oscar award winner. Respect should be given to the profession irrespective of its language & even if it does not satisfy us (sic)," another user wrote. 

Notably, this isn't the first time the movie has been linked to LGBTQ themes. Many international fans stated that they thought the two main characters' bromance wasn't just platonic following its digital release on Netflix.

In a subsequent tweet, Resul added that Alia Bhatt was used as a prop in the film. Along with Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran, Alia made a brief appearance in the movie. Her role is "little but crucial," the actor had noted during the film's promotion. The movie, which roughly had a $300 million budget, made over $1200 million during its theatrical release.

Sound designer Resul Pookutty has worked in movies including Black, Saawariya, Enthiran, Ra. One, Pushpa: The Rise, and Radhe Shyam. For his work on Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, he was awarded the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2009.
