Ponniyin Selvan I BO: The film grosses Rs 40 crore and is the best-opening Tamil film of 2022.

Digital Desk: Ponniyin Selvan I, Mani Ratnam's epic period drama, finally
opened in theatres on Friday to a rousing reception. According to trade
sources, the film grossed around Rs 40 crore net on its first day in India, with
a significant but unconfirmed amount coming from overseas as well. However,
industry insiders claim that the film has had the best worldwide opening of any
Tamil film this year, beating out Vikram and Valimai.

According to early estimates, the film grossed
around Rs 20 crore net in Tamil Nadu, while the Hindi version grossed around
Rs 2 crore. It has made an additional Rs 16-18 crore from its Tamil, Telugu,
Malayalam, and Kannada versions in the rest of the country, for a total
pan-India first-day net collection of Rs 40 crore.

    According to
industry experts, the film's total worldwide gross collection on its first day
could be as high as Rs 70 crore. However, the final figure would not be known
until Saturday afternoon. In any case, the figure would be higher than that of
Kamal Haasan's Vikram (Rs 54 crore) and Ajith's Valimai (Rs 50 crore), making
PS1 the best-opening Tamil film of the year. The film's success is predicted by
    industry experts.

Ponniyin Selvan I is based on Kalki
Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name, which tells a fictionalized
account of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), the Chola emperor Rajaraja I's
early life (947–1014). The film will be followed by a sequel next year.

Jayam Ravi plays the title role in the
film, which also stars Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha Krishnan,
Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, and Sobhita Dulipala. The film received
positive reviews from critics, who praised Mani Ratnam's direction, Aishwarya
Rai's performance, and AR Rahman's musical score.
