Digital Desk: High-speed solar winds erupting from a 'hole' on the sun's surface have raised the possibility of a minor geomagnetic storm on Earth on Wednesday (August 3). As per the reports on spaceweather.com, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters made the prediction after observing that the gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere.
At about 2309 UTC on Sunday (or 4:39 IST on Monday), Earth-orbiting satellites found an explosion in the northeastern region of the Sun, which when combined with these solar flares, may result in a geomagnetic storm.
Due to the waves of very energetic particles they produce, these storms can also produce aurora displays by gently compressing the Earth's magnetic field. As they move along magnetic field lines near the poles, these particles destroy air molecules, releasing energy as light to create auroras that are vivid and resemble the Northern Lights.
G1 flares are solar storms that are generally unharmful. However, they may have an impact on migratory animals and cause minor satellite function disturbances and power system outages.
