Exotic ‘Rio’-like birds rescued in Assam, international smuggling racket suspected

Guwahati: Just like in the much loved animated movie “Rio”, where various exotic birds are smuggled outside Brazil, among which was the exotic Spix’s Macaw (Rio), a similar incident occurred in Assam on July 28. Six Blue Macaws were being illegally trafficked in Assam.

In the animated film, Blu flies all the way from Minnesota to Rio de Janeiro because he falls in love with the last living female, ultimately have a baby together, thus saving their species.

Interestingly, a study by BirdLife International in 2018, revealed that Spix’s Macaw has been extinct in the wild.

DFO of Cachar Forest Division, Sunnydeo Choudhary has directed forest officials to ascertain the health condition of the wildlife species. He also mentioned that the seized animals will be sent to Assam State Zoo, Guwahati.

Investigating the case, Assam forest department is not ruling out any chance that this racket might be a part of a bigger international smuggling. A baby kangaroo, three tortoise and two monkeys were also recovered by the Assam forest officials along with the birds.
