Digital Desk: China stated on Thursday that it launched "precision missile strikes" in the Taiwan Strait as part of military drills that have heightened tensions in the area to their greatest level in decades.
China previously declared that its navy, air force, and other departments were conducting military drills in six zones around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory that may be occupied by force if required.
State broadcaster CCTV released footage of long-range rocket artillery being fired into the Taiwan Strait, as well as the launching of conventional missiles, that it claimed landed in waters east of Taiwan.
The drills were sparked by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island this week and are designed to publicize China's threat to attack the self-governing island nation.
Along with its efforts to diplomatically isolate Taiwan, China has for a long time threatened military action in response to the island's efforts to strengthen its de facto independence with the help of important allies like the United States.
According to Taiwan's Defense Ministry, the firing of Chinese Dongfeng class missiles started around 1:56 p.m. (05:56 GMT) Thursday.
It stated in a statement that it tracked the missile launches, which were aimed at waters northeast and southwest of Taiwan.
The defence ministry added that they have monitored the firing of long-range rockets and ammunition firing from the remote islands of Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin.
