Digital Desk: The Indian weightlifters are continuing to beat their opponents at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022, and the latest weightlifter to win a medal for the country is Lovepreet Singh. Lovepreet lifted a total of 355 kg to win the bronze medal in the men's 109 kg category.
The 24-year-old started things off by lifting 157 kg in the first snatch. In his subsequent attempts, he added a few kilograms, and on his second try, he lifted 161 kg. Lovepreet lifted a weight of 163 kg to get the second spot at the snatch.
Lovepreet lifted 185 kg in the first clean and jerk and then 189 kg in the next attempt. With a 192kg lift, Lovepreet brought the proceedings to an end. Unlike many other weightlifters, Lovepreet successfully finished each lift. He went into the competition hoping to win a medal, and he made sure it happened. The Indian weightlifting team has now won a total of nine medals.
Earlier, Sanket Sargar started the proceedings for India by taking home a silver medal on the second day of the events. He was just 1 kilogram away from taking home the elusive gold. Other weightlifters who have won medals so far include Mirabai Chanu (gold), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (gold), Anchita Sheuli (gold), Sanket Mahadev Sargar (silver), Bindyarani Devi (silver), Gururaja Poojary (bronze), Harjinder Kaur (bronze), and Vikas Thakur (bronze).
Samoa wins silver, Cameron wins the gold
Cameron's Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu, who lifted a total of 361 kg, won the gold medal in the 109 kg category. He placed third after the snatch event and had a strong comeback in the clean and jerk. In his third attempt, he made an effort to finish with a lift of 305 kg but fell short.
Jack Hitila Opeloge of Samoa won the silver medal after heaving 358 kg in total. He was unable to finish two of his three clean and jerk lifts. He finished on the podium with his first clean and jerk attempt of 194 kg.
